Nutrition Matters: Fueling Strong, Healthy Bones as We Age
When we think about staying strong as we get older, we often focus on exercise, balance, and mobility—but nutrition plays an equally important role. Our bones are living tissue, and they need the right nutrients to stay healthy and strong. Calcium, vitamin D, protein, magnesium, and other essential nutrients all play a role in supporting healthy bones and maintaining strength as we age. Just like our muscles need fuel to perform, our bones need proper nutrition to help maintain their structure and strength. So, what does bone-friendly nutrition actually look like? Start with foods you may already enjoy!
Calcium is one of the key nutrients for bone health and can be found in Greek yogurt, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, and calcium-fortified almond or soy milk. Vitamin D is important because it helps your body absorb calcium. Foods such as salmon, tuna, eggs, and fortified dairy products can provide vitamin D. Protein is also important because it supports muscle health, and strong muscles help support mobility and stability. Try incorporating chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and lean meats into your meals. Magnesium contributes to normal bone structure and can be found in almonds, pumpkin seeds, spinach, black beans, oatmeal, and whole grains. Vitamin K, another nutrient involved in bone health, is found in leafy greens such as kale, collard greens, broccoli, and spinach.
Fruits and vegetables also provide a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health. Even simple additions can make a difference—try adding spinach to an omelet, enjoying Greek yogurt with berries and almonds for breakfast, having a handful of nuts as a snack, or choosing grilled salmon with broccoli and a whole grain for dinner. It’s also important to remember that healthy eating doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul of your diet.
Small, consistent choices can add up. Try building meals around a source of protein, adding a colorful fruit or vegetable, and choosing calcium-rich foods throughout the day. Staying hydrated is important too, and drinking enough water can help support overall health and physical activity. If you have dietary restrictions, take medications, or have specific nutrition concerns, it’s always a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian before making major changes or starting supplements.
